🌊 Uttabaru Beach | Amami Oshima
🐚 A place I almost want to keep secret… where the quiet soul of Amami still lingers.
Tucked away at the edge of Tatsugo Town in the northeastern part of Amami Oshima, Uttabaru Beach is a “super local” hidden gem, barely touched by tourism. It’s a place where the true, unfiltered face of Amami quietly endures—rarely mentioned in guidebooks or social media.
I love it so much that I’ve taken my kids here to picnic, draw, read books, and simply spend the whole day in peace.
💡 Here’s what makes it special:
🔹 1. The journey itself is an adventure
Reaching Uttabaru Beach means navigating a narrow road that winds along the coast. You’ll pass through a small village, and might wonder, “Is there really a beach ahead?” That uncertainty is part of the magic. Some sections of the road are barely wide enough for one car, so if you’re not confident behind the wheel, proceed with caution.
🔹 2. No one around — and that’s the point
There are no crowds here. In fact, you’ll likely have the whole beach to yourself. All you’ll hear is the sound of waves, the rustle of wind, and the occasional call of birds. It’s this untouched stillness that makes Uttabaru so special. With weak or no mobile signal in some spots, it’s the perfect escape for a digital detox.
🔹 3. A treasure trove of corals and shells
The beach is scattered with crushed coral and seashells, each one unique—as if nature left behind its own art collection. Some are so beautiful you’ll want to take them home (※Please refrain from collecting!).
🔹 4. Water like a mirror
On clear days, the sea reflects the sky like polished glass. Tropical fish can be seen even in the shallows, making it an irresistible spot for snorkelers. The water’s clarity is simply breathtaking.
⚠️ A few things to keep in mind:
- No facilities — no toilets, no shops, no showers. Bring everything you need.
- Narrow roads with limited U-turn space. Use Google Street View ahead of time to prepare.
- Unstable phone signal — in some areas, you may lose service entirely.
- Sudden weather changes are possible, so it’s smart to research nearby shelters or evacuation spots in advance.
🌴 In a word…
“The furthest, quietest beach in Amami—reserved for those who truly seek peace.”
If you’re looking for a tourist-friendly or convenient beach, this may not be for you.
But if you believe that nothingness can be the greatest luxury, Uttabaru might just become your favorite place in the world.
