Personally, I’m a big fan of Denpaku, where you can rent an entire traditional Japanese house. But on this trip I was lucky enough to try a place with a totally different vibe—and I’ve officially gained a new favorite! So let me introduce this wonderful spot as well.
Staying at MIRU AMAMI!

This time, I stayed at MIRU AMAMI—and I have to say, the experience was even more special than I expected. The atmosphere is beautiful, of course, but what touched me most was how deeply the hotel embraces its concept, and how genuinely warm the staff are.
Everything is so well thought out. The design, the service, the hospitality—they’re all wonderful. But because it’s in Amami, there’s a kind of charm you simply couldn’t recreate anywhere else. It’s hard to put into words, but MIRU AMAMI really honors the island: its flavors, its traditions, its slow and gentle rhythm. You can feel that respect in the smallest details.

Rather than just letting you enjoy the ocean, they’ve created spaces and experiences that help you connect with it even more. Everywhere you look, there are thoughtful touches that were clearly made for guests to experience Amami to its fullest. And noticing those little ideas scattered throughout the hotel… it was honestly quite moving.

Our family stayed in two rooms this time, and because the balconies were connected by a little door, it was super easy to go back and forth between each other’s spaces. The kids were over the moon about “staying on their own,” and honestly, that alone made the trip worth it. It gave us parents a rare chance to slow down and relax—and we loved every minute.
